NATIONAL SCHOOL COUNSELING WEEK
Did you know that February 6-10 was National School Counseling Week?
Schools across the nation celebrated the unique contributions of school counselors during the week.
School counselors help students achieve success in school and plan for a career. They also help students learn how to deal with social and emotional issues that impact them daily.
Here are some fun facts about school counselors;
- There are approximately 120,000 school counselors across the nation. These counselors provide academic, college/career, and social/emotional development. This week, we celebrate them.
- School counselors serve approximately 50 million K3-12 students nationwide.
- School counselors also serve the parents and families of the students they serve. They assist them in helping make their family units successful and help navigate the educational system in grades K3-12. As educational advocates, school counselors identify and evaluate developmental problems and external factors that lead to positive student outcomes.
- School Counselors also support the teachers and administration at their schools. They are team players and collaborate with staff to develop and implement school-wide programs, classroom and individual student activities to improve student outcomes.
- School Counselors are certified and must earn a graduate degree specializing in school counseling. They must complete an internship and practicum.
